Japan
Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. Home to approximately 126.8 million, it comprises mountainous terrain, national parks, dense cities and idyllic beaches. From the former Imperial capital Kyoto, to stylish cities Osaka and Tokyo, there are many wonderful areas and landmarks to visit.
It is a fascinating country, steeped in traditions and unique social customs from flower arranging to tea ceremonies and Cherry Blossom Festivals. It is also home to traditional performance arts such as Kabuki and Kagura dance as well as many different forms of martial arts, from Judo, Sumo, Karate, Ninjutsu and Jujutsu, to name a few.
Nowhere in the world is popular culture more influential than in Japan. From manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation), Hello Kitty to Pokémon, its popular culture has become a global phenomenon. An innovation leader, Japan is also famous for its pioneering work in technology and science, including its advances in robotics and artificial intelligence.
Tokyo
Japan’s capital, Tokyo, mixes the unique combination of traditional and modern culture, from neon-lit streets, skyscrapers and futuristic technology to historic shrines and museums. A bustling cosmopolitan city, Tokyo is renowned for its exquisite food, popular culture, beautiful gardens and vibrant neighbourhoods.
From Tokyo’s oldest temple; Senso-ji, Asakusa Kannon Temple, to the Asakusa Jyakotsuyu baths - built over 100 years ago; there are many historical venues to visit. If you are looking for tranquillity then take a stroll through Tokyo’s beautiful parks Hamarikyu Teien or Shinjuku Gyoe. Alternatively, explore the vibrant buzz of the city and stop for some classic Japanese sushi at one of Tokyo’s many roadside stalls or restaurants.
